The Environmental Geography Center of UNAM and the Humboldt University of Berlin, through the Seminar on scientific perspectives on rural change research in the context of Latin America on November 21st at the UNAM – Germany headquarters in Berlin.

The hybrid event brought together 23 experts from German institutions such as the Humboldt University of Berlin, the Technical University of Munich; as well as Latin American institutions, including the University of Antioquia, the University of Río Negro, and UNAM; In order to exchange approaches to academic research in rural areas in Latin America, to know problems, contrasts and similarities with other regions from a multidimensional perspective (economic, technological, social, organizational, institutional, environmental, among others).

During the meeting, the work carried out by LATiR since 2021, an initiative that cares about inequality gaps that affect rural territories, particularly those where vulnerable groups inhabit. Its purpose is to promote and give visibility to innovation processes to reduce them.

So far, the Network is made up of academics from Mexico, Colombia and Argentina, who work in public higher education institutions and private initiative; however, it seeks to build collaboration links with researchers in Europe with the purpose of achieving and expanding its foundational goals.

The seminar concluded with the commitment of the attendees of participating in the “Tropentag” version 2023 organized by the Humboldt University, which brings together the largest amount of research in Europe in tropical areas; and with the motivation to join the initiatives of the UNAM (DGAPA) and the DFG (Fund for Research in Germany) to develop joint research proposals.
