History

Since the foundation of UNAM in 1910 academic liaison with Higher Education Institutions has been an important constituent of our academic universitary life. In that solemn event, three of the most prestigious universities in the world; the universities of Salamanca, the Sorbonne of Paris, and Berkeley of California were present as witnesses of honour. Justo Sierra, Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts at that time, punctualized the relevance of “universalize mexicanity, and mexicanize universality”. UNAM carries on with that mission. The internationalization efforts are a strategic axis in the labour of the offices abroad. With the directorate of the International Head Office (CRAI, by its acronyms in spanish), the UNAM offices abroad allow the erection of bridges with diverse regions worldwide: publicize the academic, scientific, and cultural development of our university, and similarly, learn from other institutions to incorporate knowledge in contribution to our society’s development.

In 1944 the first office abroad was inaugurated in San Antonio, Texas. With this project the cornerstone was laid of one of the main pillars of the international strategy that aims: to promote teaching and certification of spanish, and the promotion of mexican culture, as well as to support the mexican community abroad.

The impact of the aforementioned effort prompted the creation of bigger and better opportunities for the university community.

The consolidation of the international project allowed to find more UNAM offices abroad, in order to foster the internationalization of the University through the development of liaison activities, cooperation and collaboration within and among other institutions; prompt student and academic mobility (both incoming and outgoing) on different modalities, and the development of international academic programs as a strengthening mechanism in language proficiency and other professional skills.

More than 75 years certify the work of UNAM abroad. We invite you to further learn about the labour that the 11 offices abroad conduct in Northamerica, Europe, and Asia. Be part of the university community throughout the world!
