The President of the University of Illinois System (UIS), Timothy L. Killeen and UNAM´s Vice Provost for International Affairs, William Lee inaugurated the symposium “Innovation in Engineering for Sustainability, which has as its main objective to enhance strategic Synergies among researchers in Illinois and Mexico and to promote innovation in engineering towards sustainability. This is the 11th international symposium of its kind organized by the Illinois Mexican and Mexican America Students Initiative under the leadership of its founder. Dr. Elvira de Mejía.

President Killen referred to the pressing urgency that the issue of sustainability has now a days and reminded the audience that next year (June 16-20, 2025) Chicago will be the host city of the Sustainability, Research and Innovation Congress where more than one hundred nations are expected to participate. During his remarks, Dr. William Lee praised the joint partnership between UNAM and the UIS and underscored the importance of the institutional support. He also referred to the increasing role that universities should play in bringing policy recommendations to policy makers.
